Methane (CH4) is a hydrocarbon gas that is the main component of natural gas, and is also a greenhouse gas (GHG) with a global warming potential far greater than carbon dioxide (CO2). Methane makes up about 13% of Canada’s total GHG emissions, and the oil and gas sector accounts for about 40% of Canada’s methane emissions.
